antigallery

antigallery was born in 2018 in oaxaca, mexico. it started as a counter-movement against the gentrification of our art and art spaces in our city and state. the idea was to create an artistic ecology grounded in anticapitalist principles. antigallery was and is a living practice of decolonisation expressing the principles of %%green%%la comunalidad%%, which engenders autonomous collectively within a naturalised gift economy.

i share this with you, because i want you to get a sense of some of the work i do beyond the things i do online. to provide a better understanding my anticapitalist mentality, my distrust/dislike of copyright politics, and my celebration of the arts and artists.

since 2018 i have hosted five antigallery events in oaxaca and veracruz. i am looking forward to hosting another event this year to coincide with and interrupt the feria internacional del libro de Oaxaca (filo).

below is the first mission statement. for a bit more context, it started as a push against art and book fairs where the price of participating has gone well beyond the means of most artists in mexico. antigallery creates a communal space with no table or space rentals inviting the community to participate in any manner they see fit. it is a successful and living model of how the arts can do without capitalism.
