list ▴ archive ▴ index :: but do so publicly

this is a sort of extension of thought on my previous post, conscious media consumption, where i provided an example of a media log i have been using to track my media consumption. "media log" is just a fancy way of saying "media list", which is a list of media i have consumed.

another example of this loose archival process can be seen on another tool i created to keep track of solarpunk-related content i have come across on my solarpunk almanac. it is an index/archive of articles i like, but it is hosted publicly as a possible means to inspire and reinforce solarpunk philosophy, ideas, and practices.

both of these lists (and associated static sites), the media log and solarpunk almanac, are composed of html, css, and json. i am able to quickly add to them (to the json) in cli using handmade scripts and then update surge or my git to share the update online. the process of making entries helps me think a little more deeply about the articles and content i choose to add.

i don't know what it is about lists, but i love reading them almost as much as i love creating them. something is endearing about the archival process of list-making and keeping ideas. such a simple form of communication and an effective memory technique. list-making is magic, just as creativity is magic. over a decade ago, maria popova, discussed ray bradbury's belief that list-making can improve your creative process. trust me, it can!

listing, archiving, and indexing are techniques i use to build a second-brain ... these are spaces where i seed information into my digital garden(s) that i can go back to later. the fun part, is making them public. sure, not many folk come across them, but i hope these lists might be able to inspire others ... or at the very least, provide insight into my thinking and creative process. if you don't keep lists, give it a try and see if it's something that can help organise your thoughts, improve your creativity, assist in memory recall, or whatever. i also encourage you to make your lists public. blog them out, create a git page or small website or app. have fun and share! that is what we are all here online for, no?
