new things i don't really want

6 am. small thoughts about food, but really thinking about tech. i have a new phone coming. my outdated honor has become a security issue and will be retired except for as a night reading and as a termux/ssh device. %%orange%%i don't want to get a new phone%%, but to keep things secure (my banking mainly), i must.

it will fit nicely with my silly little cyberdeck + yotaphone 3+ (epaper daylight reader). %%red%%i despise planned obsolescence%%, and our current obsession with always newer, faster, better, and fancier than before. %%green%%i take care of my electronics and they could last me over a decade each%%. but instead, their use value diminishes in a few years as security patches and os updates start to leave them behind.

%%yellow%%they are still useful to me though%%, so i use them, at the behest of my partner who sees me as a tech-hoarder. tiny servers, reading devices, playgrounds, monitors, or whatever my old phones have become, they have a function. i tend to them, replace parts (when i can), and keep them living. better they serve some purpose rather than end up in a dump (or worse).

i just really want things that last. whether electronics, clothing, appliances, or household items, i do my best (within my means) to purchase things sustainable design with longevity in mind. it is certainly getting harder. but it is doeable.

i yearn for better products. but in this economy of waste, i will just have to make due with what i have, what i can save, and what i can scavenge, %%purple%%except where my hand is sadly forced%%.
