snack the planet!
i'm not sure why i have been on such a food for thought (thoughts of food) kick lately, maybe planting the garden or something? oh well. yesterday i was at a cantina with a friend. each beer or drink comes with a botana (a snack or small meal). cantina's are communal spaces. we drink, eat, talk, and sing together with strangers.
%%green%%cantina drinks act as a social lubricant and the snacks bring us together. fueling conversation.%%
this particular cantina was opened in 1936. it is young compared to some cantinas here. it has always been a social space. my friend and i appreciated the atmosphere dipping in and out of local gossip. laughing, drinking, snacking.
i was two bites into my third botana, bone marrow tacos, when el triste by josé josé came on the jukebox. everyone stopped chatting and eating and began singing: qué triste fue decirnos adiós. we all sang, looking at one another. almost the entire song. after, the table next to us laughed and motioned for my friend and i to join them. we did.
%%green%%more drinks, more snacks, more friends.%%
the entire conversation turned to food. we talked about food for nearly two hours. %%yellow%%nobody looked at their phones%%. %%green%%we were engaged. it was a wonderful time%%.
i love cantinas, botaneros, and tapas bars for this reason. %%blue%%drinks, food, and music have a way of keeping you in the moment%%, %%green%%and when you are in that moment with others, well that is how community is made%%.
so let's get out there: %%red%%snack the planet!%%
